Abstract

Contemporary artistic expressions, influenced by conceptualism, have redefined not only their material components, but also the role of the spectator. The turn to the performative shifted the notion of a static work of art to the creation of events where the viewer plays a pivotal role in the elaboration of meaning. This shift towards a shared experience between viewer and work has transformed the public’s expectation. This study analyzes these transformations and suggests the need to develop critical modalities to accompany these changes. When artistic practices significantly alter established norms, they also incite specialized critics to question their own discursive methods. A critical perspective that addresses the reception of these works in these new terms will be examined, seeking to understand how the spectatorial experience has been affected in this contemporary context.
